FORWORD By Jim Dooley Photography can inspire. It can motivate. It can be emotional. It can enlighten. It can expose. It can make you cry. It can show you people, places and things that you have never seen or experienced and make you understand things and issues. The images in the exhibition "The OTHERSIDES-KIDS IN THE POVERTY-STRICKEN AREA," by James Zeng-Huang do all of those things. Some people might say that these photographs exploit poor and neglected children. I would argue to the contrary. These photographs help show the world the helplessness of innocent children. The photographs help show the world that there are children in need and in desperate situations, no fault of their own. The children in these photographs are Chinese, but similar situations exist in every country in the world. UNICEF is a world-wide organization founded to help children. UNICEF wisely chose James Zeng-Huang to document the situation with Chinese children. James used the power of his camera and the caring and sensitivity of his heart to expose the bad situations the children live in. I have known James Zeng-Huang for more than 17 years. I have seen a tremendous growth in his photography during that time. He was an outstanding photographic intern at my newspaper, New York Newsday. He is a leader in photographic education and photojournalism in China today. Congratulations to James Zeng-Huang for a very moving and powerful photographic exhibition. Jim C. Dooley, former Director of Photography at Newsday, New York, a member of the board of directors of the Alexia Foundation for World Peace and Cultural Understanding through Photography, and founding president of the Associated Press Photo Managers organization. He teaches photojournalism at Adelphi University in New York.
